John Dickson Carr (1906-1977) was the best of the "Golden-Age" detective story writers when it came to atmosphere and ingenious plotting. He was an American expatriate who set most of his books in Britain. The early books tended toward Grand Guignol phantasmagorical effects. Later, he took to writing historical mysteries, ranging from mediocre to absolutely brilliant.
